Planning a kitchen for small rooms

An L, G or U shape is recommended for furnishing a small kitchen. If the small kitchen space does not offer the possibility of realising this, the kitchen furniture should be arranged as comfortably as possible. Would you like to furnish a small kitchen? You can find tips here.

Completely measure the premises

If you want to furnish a small kitchen, you should first measure the available space exactly as part of your kitchen planning. Remember that in small kitchens, every centimetre must be used sensibly and well thought out. Also make a note of where the windows and window sills, door and skirting boards are located, where the water and gas connections are and where the sockets are. Do you have a small kitchen? Then you can integrate open shelves or wall units with glass later on. Utilise the entire room height for this. In small kitchens with sloping ceilings, the space below can be used for serving trolleys, shelves or a small table and chairs.

Plan your own wishes and needs

To find suitable kitchen solutions for small kitchens, it makes sense to consider what the kitchen should offer. Perhaps you want a large work surface, plenty of storage space, a large kitchen sink or a dining area. In this way, you can determine in advance what your kitchen should include. Of course, the electrical appliances also play a role. Ask yourself which appliances you can't or don't want to do without. A small kitchen unit is usually equipped with the most important appliances. Otherwise, you can also buy individual electrical appliances for your kitchen.

Plan the required storage space

If you have limited space in your kitchen, creative storage solutions are all the more important. You can create storage space with cabinets and shelves for niches and corners. Apothecary cabinets are ideal for niches. They offer plenty of storage space but take up little room. Kitchen base units for corners are even more practical if they are fitted with a carousel. This saves space and you can always easily reach what you need. Open wall shelves with hooks for cooking spoons or towels are another way of making optimum use of corners and walls. These can be used to store dry ingredients such as rice, sugar and flour, as well as plates, cups and glasses.

Focus on flexible solutions

When planning a small kitchen, it makes sense to focus on the essentials. It is important to make good use of the available space. Living rooms where people come together, work and cook are very popular. The kitchen-cum-living room is in vogue. And there are numerous design options for a small kitchen in particular, thanks to spatial adaptations. Perhaps you have the opportunity to create an eat-in kitchen by removing a wall or a door?

Light & friendly decors and wall colours

Small kitchens often look overcrowded even with just a dining area and a kitchen unit. You should therefore opt for light colours. These make a smaller kitchen appear much larger. You don't always have to go for classic white. You can also design a small kitchen with a light grey, natural tones or pastel colours. The light colours should be used both on the walls and on the kitchen fronts. This creates a uniform overall look. Glossy fronts are recommended. The surfaces reflect the light, which also makes your kitchen appear brighter and larger.

More storage space with shelving & organisation systems

Are you looking for ideas for more storage space in your small kitchen? Small kitchen solutions are above all practical. All utensils can be reached quickly. But they need a fixed place for this. In this context, it is important to fully utilise the storage space in the cabinets. For example, you can install base units with a full-extension runner. Another option is storage systems that can be pulled out of the cupboard. Simply hang your pots and pans on practical hanging fixtures. Rails with magnets or hooks on the walls ensure that all important utensils are within easy reach. To make good use of corners and blind spots in the room, it is also a good idea to install a corner cabinet carousel.

Integrate effective kitchen lighting

The right lighting is important to show off your small kitchen unit to its best advantage. In addition to a ceiling or pendant light, under-cabinet lights or LED spotlights are also ideal. This ensures that the work surfaces are optimally illuminated. At the same time, good lighting makes the kitchen space appear more spacious. Tip: If you are not planning an open-plan kitchen, a sliding glass door is recommended in a small kitchen space. The glass front allows additional light into the kitchen. At the same time, you gain more space.

Beautiful and space-saving fittings

A kitchen sink is one of the standard elements of a modern kitchen. Smart solutions are required in small kitchens. Villeroy & Boch offers you a large selection of ceramic sinks - from built-in sinks to flush-mounted sinks and undermount sinks through to corner sinks. The latter in particular are perfect for kitchens with limited space. Thanks to the high-quality, robust ceramic finish, the sinks are extremely scratch and impact resistant. Of course, every kitchen sink also needs a matching kitchen tap. These are also available from Villeroy & Boch. The taps are perfectly matched to the ceramic sinks in our range and are available in elegant designs and trendy colours.

Making small kitchens cosy

Space is a rare commodity in small rooms. That's why you should make the most of your small kitchen. However, you don't have to do without beautiful decorations. Add a splash of colour with beautiful kitchen towels, pictures and vases. You can also create a small herb garden on the windowsill to give the room a natural feel. Kitchen splashbacks are also a popular design element in small kitchens. There are splashbacks made of glass, stainless steel, aluminium or foil. The classic tiled splashback is also still in demand. Tasteful kitchen tiles in various designs and formats can be found at Villeroy & Boch.

Small decorative elements for the kitchen

To give your kitchen more warmth and cosiness, you can decorate it with natural materials. Wooden kitchen furniture makes your kitchen space a cosy place. A similar effect can also be achieved with wooden kitchen accessories such as boards, salt and pepper shakers and wooden spoons. Carafes, flower pots and vases made of ceramic and earthenware also create a cosy flair. Candles are another beautiful decoration in your kitchen. Placed on the table in an elegant candle holder or tealight holder, they create a cosy atmosphere.

Hang up beautiful coffee mugs

A kitchen with wall shelves and open shelving is always a little reminiscent of earlier kitchen spaces. They bring a nostalgic touch to your small kitchen, but also look modern and stylish at the same time. They offer you the opportunity to display selected kitchen utensils in a decorative way. Instead of storing fine porcelain crockery such as cups out of sight in the cupboard, you can hang them on a shelf, for example. There is space for high-quality plates and bowls on the shelf. This turns crockery and kitchen utensils into attractive decoration at the same time.

Place herbs decoratively

In addition to houseplants, herbs in pots also add a fresh touch to your kitchen. If you like to cook often, herbs such as chives, basil, parsley and oregano are a must for flavouring dishes. These are also available in dried form. But firstly, dishes simply taste better with fresh herbs, and secondly, you can create great highlights in your kitchen with herbs in pots. Herb pots look particularly good on the windowsill. But a pretty herb shelf is also a great idea. Tip: You can find matching ceramic planters in our shop.

Get everything out of the kitchen

Kitchens for small spaces should be practical and bright. This requires clever kitchen solutions that perfectly combine the cupboards, sink and electrical appliances. Light colours for the wall design and cabinet fronts as well as beautiful decorations will make your small kitchen appear larger and friendlier. So you can get the best out of your kitchen.
