At a glance

  • During a bathroom renovation, the shower and toilet will be temporarily out of service.

  • Before the renovation work starts, look for suitable alternatives for showering and access to a toilet.

  • In some cases, tenants in a rental property may be entitled to claim alternative accommodation.

Where can you use a shower and toilet during renovation work?

If you are renovating or refurbishing your bathroom, you might find yourself in a situation where your shower and toilet are out of service for several weeks. Read our suggestions for alternatives to help you get through this period with minimum disruption:

Temporary toilet from a plumber

One convenient solution is to have a temporary toilet fitted by a qualified sanitary professional. This can be installed in your home and will be particularly useful at night. However, you should bear in mind that the temporary toilet might not be usable during certain phases of the renovation work, such as the screed drying phase.

Hotel accommodation

Booking into a hotel during your bathroom renovation can be a practical and convenient solution ensuring access to a shower and all the other sanitary facilities.

Subletting temporary accommodation

Depending on your family situation, a temporary sublet arrangement could be a solution during a longer renovation project. In this case, you could find yourself sharing a bathroom with the other tenants.

Staying with family or friends

Family and friends are often happy to provide accommodation during renovation work. You’ll benefit from a cosy family environment with access to a bathroom and toilet.

Tip:

Would you like to stay at home while your bathroom is being renovated? Or perhaps you’re not sure where you could go during construction work? Enquire about memberships or day passes at your local gym or swimming pool where you can use the showers. Combined with a camping toilet, this could be a low-cost solution!

Bathroom use during renovation work: information for tenants

Has your landlord given you notice of upcoming bathroom renovation work? We explain your rights as a tenant during a bathroom refurbishment.

  • If a rental property is not habitable during a renovation, tenants are legally entitled to claim reasonable alternative accommodation, for example, in a hotel or another property.

  • On request, landlords must pay their tenants an advance on the related costs.

  • If use of the rental property is restricted by a bathroom renovation, tenants have the right to claim a reduction in their rent.
