At a glance

  • Greet the trade workers in a friendly manner and show them where the work is to be carried out.

  • There is no need to constantly look over the tradesperson's shoulder to check.

  • A cup of coffee or a glass of water can lighten the mood and encourage conversation.

Appropriate behaviour with trade workers and fitters

Are you not sure what to do when tradespeople are working in your home? We have some practical tips covering small talk, tipping and polite behaviour. As a general rule: be relaxed, friendly, polite and open – and the trade worker will be too.

Small talk with tradespeople: how do I greet a trade worker?

Welcome the installer with a friendly smile and show him or her the room where the work needs to be done. Some small talk about general health, the weather or the journey is perfectly fine. Then leave the tradesperson to work in peace. Friendliness, openness and impartiality are crucial.

Describe the problem and the results you are looking for clearly and be open to the trade worker's suggestions. This will set the foundation for a good, communicative working atmosphere.

Tradespeople in the house: where should I stay?

There is no general rule against leaving a trade worker alone in your home. If you have known the person for a long time, there may be no reason not to. However, in the case of someone you don’t know, it is advisable to at least stay in the house. You don’t need to look over the person's shoulder all the time, but it is useful to be in the house to answer any questions that might come up.

When the work is complete: what do you give tradespeople as a thank you?

Small tokens of appreciation are a nice gesture and show that you value the installer's work. A small gift, for example, a bar of chocolate, is reasonable for larger jobs such as a bathroom renovation. Coffee, drinks or snacks and a little small talk will also lift the mood and build team spirit.

Another way to express your appreciation is to phone the company to praise the fitter and say thank you for the good work.

"Keep the change" – Do trade workers get tips?

Tipping tradespeople is not compulsory and most installers will not expect a tip as they are paid by their employer. If you still want to tip, the amount should be no more than €20 for small jobs and €50 for jobs that last several days. Bear in mind that self-employed trade workers have to pay tax on tips, whereas employed installers do not.

Who needs to provide the toilet on a building site?

On a larger building site, portable toilets are usually provided by the site manager or builder. But what is the situation when plumbers and other tradespeople are working in your home? In general, it is kind of you to let trade workers use your toilet but you are not obliged to do so.

Should I offer drinks to tradespeople?

Whether or not you offer your trade workers a drink depends on your sense of hospitality. There is no obligation to do so. However, a cup of coffee or a glass of water can have a positive influence on the general mood and motivation. There is no need to buy extra drinks – and never offer tradespeople alcohol, after all, they are working for you.

Food for tradespeople and labourers

A similar principle applies to snacks as for drinks. You are not obliged to feed installers in your home. However, if you have the time and inclination, there is nothing to stop you. On a larger project in particular, trade workers will be happy to enjoy some fresh bread rolls at their breakfast break.
