  • Appropriate insulation – ideally already installed – is important for a basement bathroom.

  • A wastewater lifting unit will stop water backing up.

  • If there is a washbasin in the utility room, use the space in the bathroom for a bath and shower instead.

Key questions when planning

A wide range of factors will determine your plans for a basement bathroom, including: will the room be used as a bathroom for visitors or as a wellness space for you and your guests?

Which room is a good choice for a new bathroom?

The water supply in a basement is often located in a laundry room or utility room, which means this area is well set up for a basement bathroom. If there is already a washbasin installed, you can convert the rest of the space into a functional basement bathroom. Install a wastewater lifting unit along with your shower and toilet to carry the wastewater away to the drainage system.

Will your bathroom have a window?

Not all basement rooms have a window. A window helps in preventing humidity in a basement bathroom, but you can still proceed with a bathroom conversion in a windowless basement. In this case, a powerful ventilation system will be required to prevent mould.

What fittings would you like in your bathroom?

Depending on the size of your basement bathroom, you have different options. Decide whether a bath or a shower would work best. Add the finishing touches to your new bathroom with practical storage solutions and good lighting.

Useful tips for a basement bathroom

Our tips for planning a bathroom in the basement

  • From a rain shower to a large bath, a connecting sauna or bidet, there are countless options. The washbasin does not necessarily need to be in the basement bathroom itself. If there is a laundry room next door, guests can wash their hands there instead.

  • If you have a sauna in the basement, a shower is useful when you want to cool down afterwards. A spacious rain shower will feel even more relaxing.

  • If the bathroom is located below the rest of the wastewater system, you will need a wastewater lifting unit to pump wastewater upwards for disposal. Take note that this will come at an additional cost.

Tip:

Appropriate insulation is important for a basement bathroom. If your basement bathroom lacks external insulation, you will need to insulate your basement from the inside. But don’t worry, you won’t have to demolish any concrete for this!
