Thermoplasts are plastics that can be moulded into all kinds of shapes when heated. Thermoplast’s great resistance, stability and durability after cooling make it a very good material for a toilet seat. Another advantage of Thermoplast is its easy recycling. Thermoplasts are also extremely resistant, including against chemical cleaning products. Thermoplast is a relatively inexpensive material too, which makes it a popular choice for toilets in highly frequented areas such as hotels and restaurants. In this context, a high-quality appearance and feel, aspects that many Thermoplast toilet seats lack, are less important. The surface is also far more susceptible to scratches than toilet seats in high-quality Duroplast. The cool to cold feeling of the material is another disadvantage of many plastics.

Polyresin, also known as cast stone, is a toilet seat material that consists of mineral or resin-bonded materials. This material’s special feature is the fact that it is hand-poured into the mould and can be given any desired colour. Polyresin toilet seats can also be transparent and little objects can be included inside to create a special look. Bubbles, shells or other little decorative items can be added to the material during production and covered with a liquid synthetic resin. After the hardening stage, they are completely sealed in the polyresin and the surface is as smooth as any other toilet seat. Polyresin is a very easy-care material that is highly resistant to many chemicals. However, the surface of polyresin toilet seats feels rather cool.

In this case, a natural material such as MDF is an ideal choice. “Medium-density fibreboard” is a natural material consisting of compacted wood residue and fibres. These are combined with adhesives and compressed to create a lightweight yet stable material. For an attractive look and pleasant feel, the compressed wooden core is painted in several layers to create a smooth, water-resistant surface. A wide range of colours is possible and MDF toilet seats are often decorated in bright shades or vibrant patterns. Classic bathroom colours are possible too, as well as a natural-look wood texture that is hard to distinguish from real wood, even with close inspection. In terms of comfort, MDF also compares well to real wood. It has a warmer surface than plastic or polyresin. However, this composite material is considerably more sensitive to harsh chemicals (such as cleaning products and disinfectants) and over time can absorb moisture and swell. Many MDF toilet seats are therefore less durable and resistant than other materials and need a little more attention and care.
