Washbasins and their components

What is the thing in the washbasin called and what is the pipe under the washbasin called? We explain the components of the washbasin

  • Most washbasin parts have technical terms that are mainly used by craftsmen. It is helpful if you know the sink part designations.

  • What is the hole in the sink called? The hole at the bottom centre is the drain, while the hole on the rear wall is called the overflow.

  • What is a washbasin trap? The siphon is located underneath the sink and connects the drain to the wall.

  • What is a drain set in the washbasin and what is the stopper in the washbasin called? This plug is the drain set. It covers the drain.

What are the differences between washbasins?

How many litres can a washbasin hold? This depends on the type of washbasin, such as whether it has an overflow or not. We explain the different types of washbasin:

Washbasin with and without overflow

An overflow is the visible opening on the vertical wall of the washbasin below the tap. The overflow channel is located in the non-visible area of the ceramic. If the water rises, it drains through the overflow and prevents flooding. At Villeroy & Boch, you will find washbasins with and without an overflow, depending on your requirements and preferences. Whether you choose a washbasin with or without an overflow depends on your taste and the requirements of your bathroom.

What does polished and unpolished mean?

A polished washbasin has a flat underside and is placed on a vanity unit. An unpolished washbasin is mounted on the wall. The type of underside therefore determines the installation: polished washbasins are suitable for vanity units, unpolished washbasins for wall mounting.

What are the differences between countertop, undermount and wall-mounted washbasins?

How is a washbasin mounted? A wall-mounted washbasin is fitted directly to the wall. An undermount washbasin is installed under the washbasin worktop so that only the inside of the basin is visible. A countertop washbasin sits on top of the vanity unit. The right choice depends on several factors: How wide is the washbasin? How deep is the washbasin? And what is the distance from the washbasin to the wall?

Determine the correct washbasin height

The right height is important when installing a washbasin or washstand. We explain below what you need to look out for here.

Observe the lateral distance to the wall

To ensure sufficient freedom of movement, the washbasin should be at least 20 cm away from the wall at the sides. There should be about 65 cm of space around the washbasin, measured from the centre. A clearance of 1 to 1.40 metres is recommended towards the front. In barrier-free bathrooms, 1.50 × 1.50 metres of free space is required in front of the washbasin.
