Installing and maintaining washbasins

The ideal installation height for your washbasin is around half your height. If you are 1.80 metres tall, the perfect installation height is 90 centimetres. If there are several users, it is best to choose an average value.

In public facilities and rented flats, there is a standard that specifies the height of washbasins. DIN 68935 states that washbasins should hang at 85 to 95 centimetres, measured from the floor to the top edge. The perfect height of the washbasin in the guest WC naturally depends on the height of your guests and the conditions on site. Incidentally, the DIN values are independent of the type of washbasin in question. 

Tall people should orientate themselves towards the upper end of the DIN standard to avoid back pain. The installation height of the washbasin for tall people is 90 to 95 centimetres. At home, very tall people can also install the washbasin at a height of around one metre.

If you are furnishing a bathroom for your children, the sanitary facilities should be adapted to their height. The washbasin for children should hang at a height of 55 to 80 centimetres. Choose the lower values for small children and the upper values for taller children. A medium height is recommended for long-term use.

For a bathroom to be considered barrier-free, it must fulfil certain requirements. In accordance with DIN 18040, the washbasin is installed at a height of 67 to 80 centimetres so that it can be driven under and used by wheelchair users. It is important that no vanity unit is installed under the washbasin to ensure the necessary legroom.

The installation height of a countertop washbasin depends on several factors, in particular the height of the washbasin or bathroom shelf underneath. In the case of a washbasin, the height depends on its standing height, whereas you can determine the height of a bathroom shelf yourself. On average, countertop washbasins are installed at a height of 85 centimetres, so the washbasin is slightly lower.
