At a glance

  • Taps generally have a standardised design that fits every washbasin.

  • Is it possible to replace built-in taps with surface-mounted models? We explain!

Taps: what are their components?

In this section, we explain the structure of a tap. The main components include: the cartridge, tap body, connection hoses, flow regulator and handle. These components work together to allow the water to flow. Most modern taps are single-lever mixers, but twin-lever taps are still commonly found.

Tools for installation

The following tools are generally required to install taps:

- Suitable tap
- Open-end spanner (size 10-13 mm, depending on the tap)
- Screwdriver
- If required, angle valves and a hacksaw (to cut metal pipes)
- If required, sealing hemp and a boxcutter (to seal and trim sealing materials)

Installation steps at a glance

A plumber will usually complete the following steps to install a tap:

  1. Step 1: Planning and preparation

Before actually installing the tap, the plumber prepares all the components, plans the distance between the tap and washbasin and shuts off the water supply. He or she will then dismantle the old tap and check to see whether new angle valves are required.

  2. Step 2: Fit the tap

The new tap is inserted in the hole in the washbasin from above and secured at the bottom using a fastening set consisting of a rubber seal, metal disc and lock nut. The nuts are then tightened and the tap is correctly aligned.

  3. Step 3: Attach the connections

The plumber attaches the flexible connection hoses to the angle valves and makes sure the sealing rings are correctly inserted to prevent water damage. The water supply is then turned back on and the plumber checks that the tap is working correctly. It is important to note that there might initially be air in the tap and pipes which could mean the water doesn’t flow evenly for the first 30 seconds.
