At a glance

  • The installation process usually involves three steps: preparation, assembly and connection.

  • Basically, taps are standardised and fit every washbasin.

  • Is it possible to replace concealed taps with surface-mounted taps? We clarify!

Fittings: What components are there?

Below we explain the tap assembly. The main components include: Cartridge, tap body, connection hoses, aerator and handle section. These components work together to keep the water flowing. These days, most taps are single-lever taps, but two-handle taps are also common.

Tools required for installation

The following materials are generally required for the installation of fittings: - Suitable fitting - Open-end spanner (size 10-13 mm, depending on the fitting) - Screwdriver - Corner valves and metal hacksaw if necessary (for fitting metal pipes) - Sealing hemp and cutter knife if necessary (for sealing and cutting sealing materials to size)

The installation steps at a glance

A plumber usually follows the following steps to install a fitting:

  1. Step 1: Planning and preparation

Before the actual installation, the craftsman prepares all the parts, plans the distance between the tap and washbasin and shuts off the water. The old tap is dismantled and checked to see whether new angle valves are required.

  2. Step 2: Installing the fitting

The new tap is inserted from above through the hole in the washbasin and fastened at the bottom with a fastening set consisting of a rubber seal, metal disc and lock nut. The nuts are then tightened and the tap is correctly aligned.

  3. Step 3: Connect the connections

The plumber connects the flexible connection hoses to the angle valves and ensures that the sealing rings are inserted correctly to prevent water damage. The water is then turned on and the function of the tap is checked. It is important to note that there may initially be air in the tap and the pipes, which means that the water may not flow evenly for the first 30 seconds.
