Installing a bath: options and tips
There are different options for installing a bath in a bathroom. Drywall construction is particularly popular. This involves cladding the bath with drywall panels and then tiling. Another alternative is a freestanding bath. If a drain is already fitted in your preferred location on the floor, you can easily retrofit a freestanding bath. Otherwise, the floor will need to be opened up. The back-to-wall bath is a mixture of these two options and is installed beside a wall.
Main components of a bath
The actual bath – freestanding, beside a wall or built-in.
Feet or bath supports to secure and level the bath. If no support system is used, bath rails will need to be attached to the wall to secure the bath at the wall connection.
The outlet and overflow fitting for water drainage – already included with some baths.
Fittings such as taps and mixers to control the water temperature and flow. Taps can be either wall-mounted or freestanding. Some baths can even be filled through the overflow system or the base.
When is it time to replace your bath?
Can a bath be retrofitted?
It is perfectly possible to retrofit a bath. However, an existing floor drain will be needed. Otherwise, the floor and tiles will need to be dug up and installation will be far more complex. A freestanding bath is generally easier to retrofit than a built-in bath.
