Washing towels

Towels come in various materials. Cotton towels should be washed differently to microfibre towels. If possible, wash coloured towels separately from white towels to avoid unsightly discolouration. Sort your towels into different categories: white, coloured, dark, cotton, microfibre, etc.

Overfilling the drum of the washing machine could mean towels won’t be cleaned properly. A partially filled washing machine wastes water and energy. Always follow the instructions provided by the washing machine manufacturer when loading the drum. As a general rule, leave space equivalent to around two clenched fists.

Cotton towels can be washed at 60 degrees Celsius. For microfibre and velour towels, choose a 40-degree cycle. If your washing machine has a special towel programme, this will help you save energy and water. Modern detergents allow you to wash even cotton towels at 40 degrees. One 60-degree cycle per month will help to kill bacteria.

Well-made towels can easily cope with 1,400 rotations per minute. The higher the spin speed, the drier your towels will be when the programme ends. There is no problem putting towels in the tumble dryer. You don’t need to hang them out to dry.
