Risks of leaving a shower unused over time

If a shower is not used over a long period of time, this results in the formation of germs that can be harmful to health. Water stagnating in the pipes provides the ideal breeding ground for different kinds of bacteria. Flowing water gives bacteria no chance to multiply as the pipes are constantly being flushed. Stagnation, and consequently bacterial infestation, can occur in both cold and hot water pipes.

What are Legionella bacteria?

Legionella are bacteria found in bodies of water. The ideal breeding conditions for these germs are temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees Celsius. This explains why Legionella bacteria are often found in hot water pipes.

If the shower is not used for a while, water stagnates in the pipes. In Germany, the water temperature is usually ideal for bacteria such as Legionella to multiply.

At what temperature can Legionella bacteria be killed?

As Legionella bacteria prefer a water temperature between 25 and 45 degrees, increasing the water temperature will stop them multiplying. To kill Legionella bacteria, run the water at the hottest possible temperature. Bacterial growth is stopped at a water temperature of 60 degrees and above, and bacteria are reliably killed at 70 degrees.

Run the water at the highest temperature setting for around two minutes to kill Legionella bacteria and then reduce the temperature as required.

Measures to prevent Legionella bacteria

  • Run the water in the shower for a few minutes at least every three days to flush the pipes.

  • Turn off unused taps to stop standing water from collecting in the pipe.

  • Insulate cold water pipes to make sure the water inside does not heat up to over 25 degrees Celsius.
